Boys to Men - Georgia | Mentoring Young Men | Mentoring Today's Youth | Helping Boys Become Better Men

How To Get Involved

We need mentors and boys need men in their lives who will help them become the man they want to be.

It's easy to be a mentor and every man has what he needs already within him, it may just need to be awakened.  Mentoring is  fun and rewarding and you get back far more than you give.

Boys to Men offers a unique approach to mentoring boys by using a group model.  It has proven to be most effective as the boys have the benefit of many models of healthy, caring men.

The Commitment:

  • Mentors are asked to give 5-6 hours a month of their time to show up for two mentoring groups.  We currently meet on the first Saturday (called an OUT group) and the third Tuesday evening (an IN group) of each month. The OUT groups are 2-3 hours and the IN groups are 2 hours.  Sometimes the time commitment may be more when we have special events like a camping trip or a river float or hike. These precious few hours a month are a great investment with huge returns for the boy, the mentor, the boys family, and the community.
  • The days and times of the mentoring groups are set by each group of local men to best fit the schedules of the boys and the mentors.
  • IN groups are theme driven and the goal is to create a safe space for the boys to open up and share. Mentors are key in leading this process and in helping draw the boys into conversation and connection.  We use a mixture of activity and group exercise.
  • OUT groups are all about fun.  Men join the boys in all kinds of active events.

  • We hike, kayak, and camp.
  • We climb at indoor climbing gyms.
  • We bowl, play laser tag and paintball.
  • We meet at a local park and cookout.
  • We play Ultimate Frisbee, Rody Ball, Football and Soccer.
  • We meet the boys on the field of play and learn a lot about each other in the process.  This opens the doors for many great mentoring moments.

The Reward:

Almost all the mentors we work with report that they get back a lot more than they give.  In fact, most are pleasantly surprised how much they learn from the boys!

Are You the One?

mattandben Initially, many of our mentors had concerns about showing up for teenage boys. These concerns ranged from feeling like they didn't have much to offer, to fear around not knowing how to mentor. Quicky they found support through the network of men that are already a part of a mentoring group and through mentor training that Boys to Men offers (read below).

The joys of mentoring teach you many things: How to listen without giving your own fantastic advice; how to be a better parent to your own children; what it's like to be in the middle of adolescence; and how to make a difference in a young man's life.
